This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurodevelopmental disorders and learning disabilitie.

1. What does it mean to be neurodivergent?

4. What mental health struggles can neurodivergent people struggle with?

People with neurodiversity can struggle with mental health issues just like anyone else. However, many neurodivergent people may struggle with anxiety due to difficulties in social situations. Living with neurodiversity can be especially hard to keep up with “normal” or societal expectations. This can be particularly evident as an adult which can lead to increased difficulty with managing those demands.

There is also the potential for mental health difficulties linked to burnout, particularly when people feel they need to ‘mask’ their emotions, and feeling as though they don’t fit in.
They may also suffer anxiety or depression as a result of sensory sensitivities. People with ADHD for example, may suffer difficulty maintaining focus, managing impulses and organising tasks, which can contribute to a poor sense of self, frustration and anxiety. Some neurodivergent individuals can struggle with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), PTSD and may at greater risk of eating disorders. Remember though, everyone is different and not everyone with neurodiversity has the same difficulties.

5. What are some myths about neurodiversity/being neurodivergent?

All neurodiverse individuals are the same: Neurodiversity encompasses a wide range of conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and more. Each condition manifests differently in individuals.

Neurodiverse individuals can’t succeed: Many neurodiverse individuals excel in various fields, leveraging their unique perspectives and talents. Success can be achieved with appropriate support and accommodations.

Neurodiversity is just a trend: While awareness of neurodiversity has grown in recent years, the concept is grounded in research and advocacy dating back decades.
