Noticing Embarrassing Health Problems? It’s Time For A Solution

It isn’t always easy to say we need help. Many of us operate with the attitude that asking for support is a sign of weakness, and when it comes to health issues, problems that we feel are embarrassing are often left unchecked. However, it’s so important to remember that there is no such thing as an embarrassing health issue. Choosing to ignore a condition because you’re worried about how someone may react or you simply can’t face tackling it head on is the quickest way to getting worse, not better.

Now more than ever, we need to remember that there are professionals out there who are ready and willing to help, to advise and to listen. Here are a few of the most common issues facing men which are not only not embarrassing, but are more common than you think, and extremely treatable.

Depression

In recent years, there has been a huge push to raise awareness of mental issues affecting adult men, particularly depression. This year has had a devastating impact for many reasons, and it’s also seen a staggering 10% rise in adults suffering from symptoms of depression. We’ve all got much better at looking out for one another during the pandemic but it’s just as important to take care of yourself. If you feel like you are suffering from these symptoms but feel unable to talk about it, take things one step at a time, think about what harm telling your GP or a counsellor could really do and remember that admitting that you’re having a hard time is a huge first step.

Erectile Dysfunction

There is a lot of stigma attached to the issue of erectile dysfunction and the idea that this is an embarrassing issue comes down to a lack of education and a lack of discussion surrounding it. It’s an extremely common problem which affects around 30 million men in the United States alone. It can be caused by health issues like diabetes, heart disease and MS. It can also be a consequence of some surgeries and medication, it can be a symptom of psychological or emotional issues, and it can be an early warning sign of serious issues ahead if left unnoticed. There are a wide a range of treatment options available including injections, pumps or a penile implant. Erectile dysfunction becomes less and less intimidating as you learn more about it, and ED Solutions has a wealth of information on causes and treatments.

Alcoholism

Statistics have shown that the UK has seen a shocking increase in alcohol consumption during lockdown in 2020. This article shows that 24% of people are now believed to be at risk of alcoholism or currently dependent on alcohol to get through the day, with 51% of people over 50 potentially consuming a damaging amount. It can be very difficult to admit that you have a problem with alcohol, and even harder to see it as a problem that can be fixed. However, it’s vital to remember that there is help out there and that there is no story that support workers and health care professionals have not heard before. If you feel like you are no longer in control of your drinking, you need to know that there are people out there who understand what you are going through and who can help turn things around.
