The secret to happiness in retirement – look after someone else’s pets!

Retirement Reinvented: Homesitting Brings Joy, Purpose and Savings to Retirees

Leading UK home and pet sitting company, Homesitters Ltd, has conducted research amongst over 400 of its homesitters, which shows that homesitting has a significant positive impact on retirees.

The study reveals that homesitters feel happier, are better off, and have a sense of purpose in retirement due to their involvement in homesitting.

According to the research, the top three benefits of homesitting for people are getting the chance to explore various parts of the UK, looking after pets, and having a change of scenery. Six out of ten homesitters enjoyed the opportunity to visit new places, while 77% became attached to the pets they looked after.

Interestingly, 80% of homesitters also reported making savings on their utility bills when they are on assignment.  Almost a third said they save their earnings from homesitting, while others said they use it to pay bills or pay for holidays.

Becoming a homesitter can also have a positive effect on mental and physical health, with 90% of homesitters reporting that homesitting had a positive impact on their overall wellbeing. The top three things that homesitters enjoy most on assignments are visiting local attractions, looking after pets and taking exercise.

Ben Irvine, Director of Operations at Homesitters Ltd, said, “We are delighted to find out that our homesitters are happier and feel more fulfilled in their retirement because they enjoy the role so much. Keeping busy, looking after pets, taking exercise, and exploring unfamiliar places cane help people have a fulfilling and joyful retirement.”

Homesitters Ltd is unusual in that all its homesitters are employed by the company, providing retirees with a reliable and professional source of income.

The company offers flexible working hours, which allows homesitters to fit the role around other priorities such as looking after grandchildren and holidays.

“We have been in business a long time and have built our reputation on having happy clients and homesitters,” added Irvine. “We operate throughout the UK and are currently recruiting new homes and pet sitters to join the team. We would encourage retirees who think the role would suit them to please get in touch.”
