COST-A DEL SALCOMBE: THE NATION’S MOST EXPENSIVE SEASIDE TOWN REVEALED

  • Brits could be paying up to 60% more on typical seaside buys depending on where they holiday
  • Salcombe is revealed as the UK’s most expensive coastal resort, with a selection of seaside essentials setting holidaymakers back almost £25 on average
  • Whitstable, South East, is crowned the most affordable seaside getaway with a collection of beach day goodies costing £15.61 on average

As Brits get set to flock to the UK’s beaches this summer, new research reveals the cost of a typical trip to the seaside could be up to 60% more expensive depending on which coastal town you visit.

Research from leading savings site, VoucherCodes.co.uk, analysed the cost of a regular portion of cod & chips, a scoop of ice cream in a cone, a draught pint and a bucket & spade at shops in 20 of the UK’s most popular seaside destinations to find out which resort offers the best value for money.

Salcombe is the most expensive location on the list with a selection of seaside essentials setting you back £24.95 on average, costing 60% more than the cheapest destination. The popular Cornish town also topped the list for the priciest fish & chips at £12.52 on average for a regular cod and chips, with one chippy even charging £15.95. Following closely behind is Dartmouth, where visitors can expect to pay £22.41 on average for the items, including a whopping £4.80 for a draught pint, the priciest across all 20 beach resorts.

At the other end of the spectrum, Whitstable in the South East is the most budget-friendly seaside destination with a selection of typical beach essentials costing £15.61 on average – 11% less than the median cost of all destinations (£17.46) and almost half as cheap as Salcombe.

For those that never like to be more than short walking distance away from a pub, Weymouth and Whistable are the best places to go, with the nearest watering hole a mere 79 feet away from the beach. Those holidaying in Weston-super-Mare will have to travel further afield for their tipple with the nearest pub 0.7 miles away from the sand, the furthest of all 20 locations.

Anita Naik, Lifestyle Editor at VoucherCodes.co.uk, commented: “UK beaches have so much to offer, which is good news for day trippers and holidaymakers alike as uncertainty around travelling abroad this summer remains.

“We wanted to find out which locations offer better value for money when looking at shops in each area that sell some of the more popular seaside items. While prices in each location may vary depending on which shop you visit, from those analysed it is clear there are differences around the country so you may want to do your research before heading to the coast.
