Grimsby Care Home resident celebrates 100th Birthday

Residents and staff at Grimsby Grange & Manor care home in Lincolnshire have come together to celebrate Vera Sak’s 100th birthday.

Vera, born in 1921, spent her birthday reminiscing with staff about her impressive and full life with her husband, Frank, and their family. They were married for over 55 years and had their two sons, Robert and John, who gave Vera and Frank their four grand-children and great grand-children.

Grimsby Grange & Manor in Grimsby provides specialist residential, dementia residential and short-term respite care and has been home to Vera since August 2016.

Staff organised a spectacular tea party for Vera to celebrate her very special day where everyone enjoyed a delicious cake sent by her family. She also received numerous bouquets of flowers, chocolates and sweets and lots of thoughtfully written, including a card from the Queen. She commented, “Happy Birthday to me, I am 20 today! I’ve had a lovely day spent with the most important people in my life and surrounded by my beautiful flowers. My top tip to live to 100 years old is to keep your brain active and eat lots of toast.”

Vera ended the day by spending quality time with her family, who came to visit one at a time in the designated visitor’s pod room and she also enjoyed a Zoom party later in the afternoon with a number of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who all sang happy birthday to her.

Caroline Whelpton, Home Manager said, “It was a brilliant day enjoyed by all and especially Vera.”
